What Is Included in a Professional Dental Cleaning?
When you sit down in the dentist’s chair for a cleaning, the dental hygienist will perform the following cleaning tasks in your mouth:
- Scaling teeth. The hygienist will gently remove plaque and tartar from your teeth.
- Polishing teeth. The polishing step gives your tooth enamel an extra glossy shine while also removing anything that was leftover from the prior steps.
- Remove all hard and soft deposits on the teeth. These deposits could be fragments of food, stubborn stains, or built-up tartar and plaque.
- Periodontal exam. The hygienist will examine the gums around the teeth for pockets, which could harbor bacteria and lead to gum disease.
How Do Cleanings Help?
Dental cleanings are vital to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. When you regularly get your teeth professionally cleaned, you end up saving money and time. Preventing major dental problems keeps you from spending hundreds of dollars on costly dental restorations. You’ll also spend less time in the dentist’s chair because your teeth will remain healthier and cleaner all year long.Â
Did you know that plaque is mostly invisible and hard to remove at home? Professional dental cleaning removes that difficult plaque, so it doesn’t grow and create bigger problems. We strive to help you maintain a beautiful, clean smile that will last your entire life.Â

How Long Does a Cleaning Take?
At Smile Academy of Kentucky on Dixie, we generally allow 45 minutes to an hour for adult dental cleanings, and 30 minutes for child cleanings.
How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?
If you already have good oral hygiene and healthy periodontal readings, then we recommend scheduling a dental cleaning two times a year. If your periodontal health is not where we would like to see it, we may recommend you get your teeth cleaned every 3-4 months, which is three times a year.
Â
Is a Dental Cleaning the Same Thing as a Dental Exam?
No, it is not the same thing. A dental exam checks for tooth decay and periodontal health. A dental cleaning removes all hard and soft deposits from the tooth surfaces either by hand scaling, using an ultrasonic scaler, or both. Most of the time, you will get a dental exam during the same appointment as your dental cleaning.Â
